Scoring Tutorial Overview

Training is necessary for reliable scoring on this tool.
The information provided in this document will address:

  • Information about the IOWAN
  • General Scoring Directions
  • Specific Scoring for Exact Words
  • Specific Scoring for Recognizable Letters
To clarify the information, examples and student samples will be provided using the following format:

Red line, design only
Small red box, design onlyText model:

Taylor had a new red sled

Yellow line, design only
Small yellow box, design onlyStudent model:

Taylor had a new red sled

The IOWAN produces two scores per writing sample: a) number of exact words and b) number of recognizable letters.

If a word is recognizable, it is also considered legible by the authors. This is important when scoring recognizable letters but does not affect the scoring for exact words.

There are specific grade level passages for grades 1-5 as well as a generic passage which is used for all grades 1-5.
